Switchtalk ©2014

Gavin Gold

From a lengthy era of peace, love, LSD, miniskirts, long hair and platform shoes the world was ready for a change. The raw sound of the Sex pistols and The Clash quickly transformed the hippie into the angst skinhead. The 80’s decade became an eclectic decade of fashion and music and it was then that Switchtalk was born. In the 1980’s the South African music industry was generally signing pretty boy bands and girls with big........ hair. Like most bands of that time Switchtalk hit a dead end and only lasted about a year. The members went their separate ways and had minimal contact over the years. In July of 2013, 29 years later the original members connected on social media which led to a crazy decision of a Switchtalk reunion gig. With very short notice a gig at the Mercury Lounge was booked. The band enjoyed it so much that they decided to play more gigs. They also returned to the recording studio where they bashed out a couple of fresh tunes. “These tempos are so fast, I wonder if I can keep up” says Greg Schoeman “I felt 21 again even if it was for a short while” says Gavin Gold “What were we thinking!” says Marius Geyer “I wanna be a part of this vibe” says Gary Hendricks “I had so much fun” says Benita Sher.

Biography

Influences: Elvis Costello, The Clash, Talking Heads, The Jam, The Police, Radio Head:  Gavin Gold was born in Cape Town, South Africa. It was the dark days of apartheid. This inspired him to write many songs as a form of rebellion against the rigid and conservative thinking of the time. Music impacted Gavin's life at very young age. His world changed forever when he first heard The Beatles.  Awkwardly strumming a few chords, he wrote his first song at the tender age of eleven. Straight after high school, he immersed himself in the Johannesburg music scene; writing, recording and performing at hundreds of venues nationwide. He stirred up interest with records companies and eventually signed a publishing deal with Peer Music, South Africa. In the 1980’s he was guitarist and lead vocalist in the successful South African punk pop band, “Switchtalk”. In 2013 the band played a revival concert at "The Mercury Lounge" in Cape Town, much to the delight of their loyal fans.   In the early 1990's when apartheid was still in the air, he joined keyboardist, singer and producer Abe Sibiya to form a multi racial duo. They toured extensively in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland to great acclaim. In 2012 Gavin Gold and Jo Popp formed the vibrant cover duo “The Professors” performing at weddings, private parties, corporate functions and festivals throughout South Africa and internationally. Gavin Gold’s 2016 album release 'Neatness' was co-produced with 'Toxic Shame' lead singer, Deon Du Toit and his 2017 EP release 'World Upside Down' was produced by Mark Mc Cree of 'The Mc Cree Band’.  His album launches were held at the popular Cape Town venue, The Alexander Theatre. Gavin Gold has recently relocated to New York City. He is currently writing songs with Off Broadway hit singer songwriter, Steve Schalchlin and is performing and growing his following.
